Enseignant en cinéma et anthropologie à Harvard, Robert Gardner (né en en 1925) a non seulement marqué le cinéma documentaire américain grâce à une multitude de films réalisés depuis les années 1950, mais aussi par de multiples initiatives favorisant la création cinématographique, documentaire ou d’avant-garde. C’est une figure majeure qui fait le lien entre Robert Flaherty et Peter Hutton, entre des préoccupations scientifiques et d’avant-garde, à travers une anthropologie poétique affirmant la subjectivité du cinéaste. Cette oeuvre reste à être pleinement diffusée en France.

Le texte qui suit a été écrit par Ed Halter, critique américain, co-fondateur de Light Industry à Brooklyn, NYC, à l’occasion d’un week-end d’événements en l’honneur de Robert Gardner au College de Bard (Etat de New York), en octobre 2009. Cet évènement comportait notamment une table ronde réunissant le cinéaste, le philosophe Stanley Cavell, la photographe Susan Meiselas, l’écrivain et critique belge Luc Sante, le réalisateur Charles Warren et l’universitaire Ian Buruma, que nous avons eu l’opportunité d’enregistrer.

Professor of cinema and anthropology at Harvard University, Robert Gardner (born in 1925) has not only made his mark on American documentaries thanks to the films created since the late fifties but also by multiple initiatives favoring film making, documentary making or avant-garde creations. This is a major figure who draws a parallel between Robert Flaherty and Peter Hutton, panning a poetic anthropology affirming the filmmaker’s subjectivity. This work still has yet to become widespread in France.

It was commissioned for a weekend of events honoring Robert Gardner at Bard College (State of New York) in October 2009. During that event a round table took place with the film maker, the philosopher Stanley Cavell, the photographer Susan Meiselas, the Belgian critic and writer Luc Sante, the director Charles Warren and the professor Ian Buruma, a round table we had the opportunity to record.
